Sister Visit Update

My sister and her son left a little while ago. We had a blast. We made pesto for the freezer (lots of it). We made THE SAUCE. She rescued a chicken from The Yellow Dog's mouth. We re-queened a bee hive (I injured the queen accidently a couple of weeks ago and she obviously didn't recover). We chatted. She cleaned my kitchen. She cleaned my kitchen. I shared half of the pesto, sauce, cucumbers, tomatoes, zinnias, and anything else she wanted. Did I mention she cleaned my kitchen. Do I have a great sister or what?

Sister visits are one of the best things about Summer. Maybe she'll come back in a week or two when the peas are ready.

Just for a totally truthful accounting of the chicken rescue... The sister screamed bloody murder for two boys to actually touch the chicken!

The pesto recipe is not really a recipe. It started as one, but we usually use what we have. I looked in the freezer and I had a cup and a half of pine nuts. We started from there. I always toast nuts when I cook - an extra step but well worth the effort in taste. I used 12 cups of basil leaves (no stems) and 12 pieces(maybe more) of garlic. I chopped the garlic in the food processor along with a generous sprinkling of kosher salt, then added the pine nuts and basil. Finally, I added just enough olive oil to cover the mixture. We then packed it in small bags for the freezer.

When it comes out of the freezer. You add parmesan and olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. The cheese doesn't hold up well in the freezer for very long and My sister and I don't like the looks of the frozen olive oil. The hardened oil makes me think heart attack. I only use cheese that I freshly grate for pesto. It does make a difference.

I know this is a lame recipe, but it is the best I have.
